Your work focuses heavily on human stories. Can you share what initially drew you to this subject matter and how it has shaped your photography journey?

From the very beginning, I’ve been deeply moved by the resilience and vulnerability of the human spirit. Growing up in Bangladesh, I was surrounded by stories of struggle, hope, and survival. These narratives, often overlooked by the broader world, sparked my desire to document and share them. My photography journey has been shaped by a commitment to portraying these stories with authenticity and empathy, giving voice to those who might otherwise remain unheard.

Can you describe your creative process when planning a photoshoot? How do you decide on the concept, location, and composition?

The creative process begins with research and immersion in the subject matter. I spend time understanding the context and the people involved, which informs the concept of the shoot. Location is chosen based on its relevance to the story and its ability to enhance the narrative visually. Composition is critical; I aim to create images that are not only aesthetically compelling but also rich in meaning. I often look for natural light and organic moments, allowing the story to unfold naturally through the lens.

Risky Ride

You’ve traveled extensively to capture human stories. Can you talk about one of the most memorable experiences you’ve had while documenting a particular story?

One of the most memorable experiences was while documenting the traditional fishing festival in Pabna, Bangladesh. I captured the moment when villagers, young and old, came together to fish in the same river their ancestors did. The energy, the joy, and the sense of community were palpable. It was a beautiful reminder of how traditions bind people together, even in a rapidly changing world. This experience not only deepened my appreciation for cultural heritage but also reinforced the importance of preserving these stories through photography.

What are some of the challenges you face as a photographer, and how do you overcome them?

Photography, especially in challenging environments, comes with its set of difficulties—be it logistical issues, gaining the trust of subjects, or dealing with the emotional toll of witnessing suffering and hardship. Overcoming these challenges requires resilience, adaptability, and a deep sense of purpose. Building relationships with communities, being patient, and always striving to connect with people on a human level helps me to navigate these obstacles and stay true to the story I’m telling.

Which photographers or artists have influenced your work the most, and in what ways?

I’ve been influenced by the works of Sebastião Salgado and Steve McCurry. Their ability to capture the profound beauty and struggle of human life has been a significant inspiration. Salgado’s dedication to long-term projects and his focus on social issues resonate with my own approach to storytelling. McCurry’s use of color and composition to create powerful, emotive images has also greatly influenced my visual style.

Devastating Flood

Your work has been featured in over 100 major publications. How has this exposure influenced your approach to storytelling through photography?

The exposure has been both humbling and motivating. Being featured in major publications has reinforced the importance of responsibility in storytelling. I’ve become more conscious of how my images can influence public perception and the importance of maintaining integrity and respect for the subjects I photograph. This platform has allowed me to reach a broader audience, amplifying the voices of those whose stories I document, and has driven me to continually refine my approach to create impactful narratives.
