Artist Statement

“My paintings are about the feminine protagonist creating her own personal mythology and meaning through her environment and story. Through using the symbols and aesthetic tropes found within fairytales, I explore the process of self discovery that the heroine faces. In this way, I address timeless concepts that apply to women today. I weave the backdrop of nature into the art like a stage set, and include animal spirits, costuming to shape identity, and the spiritual other world as a deeper layer. My primary medium is oil painting, although sometimes I branch into other mediums to realize my vision.  I love the idea of making a precious object, such was created historically with the use of precious materials.  When I use gold and silver leaf, I am conscious of this alchemical and sacred history as I create my own precious object imbued with ideas and meaning. In all the work, the triumph of the spirit of the feminine resonates.”
