Artist Statement
I work with walnut ink and graphite to uncover images stored within my nervous system. It’s an obsessive process of active imagination that allows me to rework the same imagery until I understand its significance. The images come from dreams, vivid meditations, and intuition. My appreciation for the formal qualities of drawing (value, contrast, and composition) pushes me to hyper-define each emerging shape through mark-making. I am left with a presence of disquiet, or dream-like severity. Informing this work is my research in art therapy and the imaginal realm. It pushes me to understand an individual’s internal cast of characters as they are strengthened by the external world. What are we but a multi-voiced novel? It’s like tuning into subconscious radio-frequency—hundreds of stations, hundreds of conversations, and hundreds of songs. Deciphering these subtleties takes reiteration, and relies on the limitations and intentions I give myself. I love the wisdom I gain through this process. As I evolve, old patterns decompose in my work, and new patterns blossom through the noise. I can keep moving.
